Arris TG1672G Wireless Cable Modem Product Details

The Touchstone Arris TG1672G is a DOCSIS 3.0 Data Gateway featuring 16×4 downstream/upstream channel-bonding with superior throughput. The TG1672G combines two analog voice lines, a 4-port Gigabit Router, and 802.11n wireless access point with two independent simultaneously operating 802.11n radios into a single device capable of supporting both home and small office applications. Using an advanced dual core processor, this modem can achieve high bandwidth performance without affecting voice quality, a historical ARRIS product standard.

The Arris TG1672G also supports MoCA 1.1 for in-home video and data distribution over coax. This feature packed dual stack IPv4/IPv6 wireless telephony gateway will lead the future for advanced home and small office services. The two 802.11n radios create two concurrently operating wireless networks on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands.

The improved antennas provide increased flexibility and throughput and deliver unprecedented performance while also offering improvements in home coverage above those of previous technologies.

The TG1672G is Not Compatible with Optimum Cable

Optimum’s list of approved modems only includes a few models including both the Arris TM1602A and Arris TM822A, however the TG1672G is not currently listed as a compatible equipment option both on their website as well as on any other sites with an Optimum approved modems list. In the past, their list has included the “TM1672G” which is not currently being manufactured, and does not appear on Arris’ website. Additionally, past customers have purchased this model in an attempt to find an all-in-one device to handle their networking needs. Unfortunately, however all of these orders were returned due to compatibility issues.

About brand

When you choose an ARRIS SURFboard, you’re joining a 60-year legacy of innovation from the company that invented digital TV and brought wireless Internet into the home with the first cable modem gateway. The same company that the world’s leading service providers choose to connect millions of people around the world to the Internet. Please note that some versions of this product will come with Motorola branding. This is due to a merging of Arris and Motorola a few years ago. While this does not affect the functionality of the product in any way, we feel it's important to mention.

Works well with Time Warner Cable at 100Mbs (or higher if available). Takes some work to set up VOIP ports for an OBI 202 server.

    Inger – June 21, 2016

Bought it to replace my leased modem from TWC. It was not on their list of supported customer modems. I had the same model and therefore didn’t suspect to get any problems with it. Activation by TWC took 5 minutes, it works perfect. I pay for 200Mb, get around 235Mb. Wireless works well too. Don’t have the phone service with them. So from now on it saves me $10 every month from my bill.

    Jim – January 6, 2017

Shipment arrived quickly. Big disappointment in that Time Warner can not use this unit to activate my phone – period, no way, no how. I called back numerous times like the instructions say if you run into that problem. I even found an article about it on Time Warner’s site that the phone option could not be activated. This is an identical unit to the one they supplied, and the seller says it has the phone option in it. What has happened is that Time Warner is using their modem for the phone only which does relieve the $10.80 per month charge to rent theirs for the internet. They do not charge to use their modem for phone only. Now I have two modems running electric and also taking up extra space on the shelf, however I am saving the rental charge on the modem which is great, because in 5 months I will in effect have this unit paid for in the savings I am realizing. Bought two of these, one for us and one for our son who also has Time Warner, but he has no phone option, so his is working great and he just returned TW’s modem to start his monthly savings as well. Overall, everything is good and we are pleased except for the phone problem.

    Customer – February 1, 2017

Purchased only as a modem because I was displeased with the cable company’s device and their fee. I have a much better wifi router. The device I received looked near new and worked according to specs. An Arris 1672 is an Arris 1672 and should have filled the need. So much of this is an endorsement for Amazon and the vendor for providing a product as described.

This product works well with my local internet/phone company, Entouch. The transition to both phone and internet was smooth, took the technician 10 minutes to get it installed. Don’t rent, buy… you ended up saving money in the long run… unless you are one of the people who likes to shop for new internet/phone company every year.

    Wilson Li – February 16, 2017

The router works fine and the vendor got it to me very promptly.

One thing to note for Time Warner / Spectrum customers like me who are trying to get their monthly equipment rental fee removed: Spectrum apparently requires a Spectrum modem for their phone line. You need to go to a Time Warner store and talk to one of their techs. They should give you a cable signal splitter and additional cables for free, and add the MAC ID of your new modem to their system. (Doing so will immediately disconnect the Internet signal to your current modem, which caused some confusion at home when I did this.) Connect the splitter to the cable where the signal comes in from, then connect the two modems to the out end of the splitter. (Make sure to mark which modem is which, e.g. with a Post-it.)

End result of all this is that you’ll keep the previous modem from TWC / Spectrum as a phone modem, and use this one for Internet. TWC will still remove the equipment rental fee. No, it doesn’t make much sense from a policy standpoint, but I checked my bill this month and it’s $15 lower, even though I technically still have their equipment.

Fast modem. Bought to save money on monthly rental from Spectrum. There is no telephone jack however and I had to still use the old box. Now I’ve got 2 boxes. Spectrum agreed to not charge me for it but I haven’t had my bill so I don’t know if they honored the agreement.

It worked well with TWC for internet.
However it cannot be programmed to work for phone/fax. I visited the store of TWC to get free splitter.
I keep the same item from TWC for phone line.

    Jordan Gross – July 22, 2017

I thought that TWC would allow me to return their modem, but since this is a “third party” modem (Same exact model as the one they gave) I had to keep the old broken one for home phone service. TWC doesn’t charge you the $10 rental fee when you’re only using their modem for phone service.

    Southern Charm – August 16, 2017

I bought this modem because it is IDENTICAL to the one I was leasing from Time Warner Cable/Spectrum. Please be advised that if you do the same and have digital phone service with TWC/Spectrum, you HAVE to keep the other modem. They will not let you use this one for phone even though it is a TELEPHONY modem. However, they state that I am no longer being charged the monthly fee for the “internet” modem because it is now being used just as the “phone” modem.

That’s right. I still HAVE the original modem, which is the same as this one, because TWC won’t put the software on it to handle telephony service. Yet, somehow, it’s all of sudden “free” instead of costing me $10 a month even though I STILL HAVE IT! It’s the dumbest thing ever…

I would return this and buy just a plain ol’ internet modem, but it was such a hassle dealing with TWC to get everything setup that I can’t even be bothered to go through that again. So, be advised; if you have TWC digital phone and internet, save yourself a few bucks and skip the telephony modem (this one) and just buy a plain old internet-only modem because then you’ll get to keep the old one for free.

Yes, it’s dumb. I’ve said that already but, well, it IS Time Warner/Spectrum, so what else do you expect?

    Traveling Gal – September 27, 2017

Works great – easy setup. However, I had an issue about a month later when CenturyLink cut off my internet and said that I wasn’t paying my bill. Since I pay automatically, this was nonsensical. Payment customer service at CenturyLink was clueless, but tech support figured it out. The previous owner’s information was still listed for the modem. They helped me put in the correct identification (some gibberish code that only they would know) – problem solved! If you’re buying a modem through a vendor other than CenturyLink, this may be an issue for you, even if the modem appears new, as mine did. To avoid this, connect with CenturyLink tech support when you’re setting up the modem and make sure that the modem is assigned to you!

    Wisconsin – February 15, 2019

Product worked great for cable but it does not have software for use with telephone. Cable company(Spectrum) would not work with me on this plus their modems are so called free. This modem was the same as used for Time Warner before I switched to Spectrum and Spectrum would not work with me on this. I never tried to get to the internet since I had no phone
