Purchased this modem because I was tired of paying $7 a month to rent one from the cable company.
Thus far my experience with it has been very good although there have been some minor hiccups (although that’s not why I’m docking a star off the rating). This connected flawlessly to the Cox network and initial setup was a breeze. The hiccups were my fault and due to a learning experience on my end. This modem is feature rich, so much so that you might be spending more time in the owner’s manual than you were expecting. Want to adjust the amount of bandwidth in the 2.4 Ghz range has? You can. Want to change the amount of power the 5 Ghz range outputs? You can. The coverage in my home is awesome, I can stream to a Roku 3 in 1080p with no stutter, etc. My only beef with this product is not being able to upgrade the firmware! The option is restricted to “admins” i.e. cable companies (or so the website says). That to me is a foul, but not enough to knock a star off the rating. Would buy again

It is a great gateway when it works. I wanted to get rid of my separate cable modem and wifi router so the SBG6782-AC seemed like the perfect fit. It cost more but for the simplicity of the system I was willing to pay.
Out of the box the gateway was easy to setup and worked perfectly and I was able to connect to the internet with all of my devices using both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi antennas. The speed of the network was excellent with almost no dead zones in my house.
The trouble – after about a week of use the 2.4GHz antenna fails and I can only get a signal from it if I am about 3ft away any farther and no signal. Very disappointing because I have a lot of devices that use the 2.4GHz signal. Both (The original purchase and the replacement) of the SBG6782-AC that I have had acted the same way so I feel it is a hardware / firmware issue. To fix I have disabled the 2.4GHz radio on the SBG6782 and plugged my old DLINK N-type router into the ethernet output of the gateway. So much for a simple system. The DLINK has excellent range in my house so I don’t think it is a interference issue. The SBG6782-AC is still outputting a strong 5GHz signal and it works as a good modem for my cable internet so for now the system is working.

Was able to hook it up in a few minutes, then called Time Warner and had them add to my account which took another 15 minutes and I was up and running. We noticed a big Improvement in speed and range on the wireless compared to an older model Arris router. The paperwork has clear instructions with a large sticker that has everything the cable company will ask. There is a security key on the sticker that is the wireless security code. You can also push a botton on the router to wirelessly pair with devices. I have been through about 5 different boxes in recent years and this is the only one that works in my entire house. Previous Arris model was still working, but I wanted to return to stop renting it. I had about 3 boxes of different mfrs over heat and stop working and constantly kick off internet. Motorola Arris is one of the more reliable brands in my opinion and can handle heavy use of many devices.

When our cable company upgraded its lines, we were forced to upgrade our Router, I was not a happy camper at the thought but you can’t fight that any more than City Hall so… I read up online, in the comparison sections, where you can see all the products with the pros and cons. This seemed a likely (though more expensive) choice. I should mention here, this is for our 2nd home in a beach town… where during the SPRING/Summer hundreds more people show up in our immediate vicinity. Little did I know a great many of them were pirating my internet service, too cheap to get their own!!! I did know that May through September the internet always had slowdowns, conniptions and stoppages it never had (except on holiday weekends) BUT I blamed it on the company, thinking they just wouldn’t invest in the newer infrastructure to fix the glitches. Turns out it was the neighbors and others driving by in a car looking for a free internet hookup! Now, we not only get to keep all our own bandwidth (and with 5-8 Macs running we need it!) the SPEED is scary fast! Delightful. Add to this, the security aspects of ths model are far upgraded above older models and one can make their own WEP password, as well as multiple passwords for other users. When I go home to VA I’m putting this same router there, its excellent and priced very fairly.

I’ve called this company twice, both times I probably knew more than the person I was talking to. I asked about logs. And he said, logs? I said yea, like the local logs. Won’t those tell me why I cant connect to a URL? He said, are you blocking fragmented ip packets? Or what about the ip flood detection? I said, aren’t those to protect attacks on my system? Every question was followed with, let me put you on hold for a second. The firewall is not customizable and is stopping me from accessing important websites. I was told it was a problem with the website and not the firewall. I asked for a level 2 tech and was told I needed to wait 2 days for a call. I told him, fine. Either way the firewall seems useless to me, but I’ll have to do some research on port forwarding, triggers and ip filtering. Oh, and fyi, my son’s Xbox Live won’t work with the firewall on medium. Although it has a setting preset in there for Xbox and Steam, it still doesn’t work.

First of all, I’m glad I ignored the all the people who said this will not work with Charter. I called Charter after I ordered this (of course I’m doing this all out of order) and the first gal told me it would not work. Then I called Arris/Motorola and they it would work but it would be up to me to find the right person at Charter who could get it set up. Once I received the unit, I called Charter back, gave them the MAC address and the guy got it set up no problem at all!
Now, I’ve read many of the negative reviews and when deciding on a new modem/router there are negative reviews on all of them so I had to just jump in there and pick one. This unit is replacing an existing Motorola Gateway modem that was pretty rock solid, it was just getting old and slow for today’s standards. Plus, this one also had built in MOCA which I discovered about a year ago and it’s completely awesome. Got this set up going from a G router to an N/AC router and from DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0, I noticed a huge difference right off the bat. This is huge for us because we can have up to 3 TV’s streaming at the same time as we no longer have a cable TV subscription and use our OTA antenna, SLING TV, Netlfix, and Amazon to watch TV.
The reason for the 4 out of 5 stars is that I’ve already had to reset it once and it hasn’t been 24 hours yet. I did read in the reviews that many had to reset this unit several times and I’ve had it happen once already. I will keep my eye on it and adjust my review accordingly if it gets better or worse. However, there is always a fix as I’ve read in some of the reviews. It’s just a matter of finding it.
So far so good and I will try to keep this review updated as time goes on.
UPDATE – So far so good and moving up to 5 stars. I’ve had to reset it once since I fired it up and it’s been pretty solid since. I’m not sure how “Strong” the signals “should be” but this is a huge improvement over what I had before so I am happy happy happy!

I got tired of dealing with the dumpy routers Comcast kept giving me, as well as strangers being able to use the Xfinity channel thing to log in. I thought I would have to jump through hoops to get it hooked up. Nope. I plugged it in, connected the cable, and it did whatever it needed to do to get online. I didn’t have to call anyone or go online and enter anything. So thumbs up on that. I really enjoy being able to stream Netflix without the first several minutes of the movie or show looking like a vhs tape. The speed is fantastic. My only real complaint is that the range is not as star-spangled great as I had hoped. This is an option in the menu to expand the range, but another device needs to be purchased in order for this to work. I have a PS3 in the bedroom, 2 walls and about 23 paces away that can only sporadically connect. Unfortunately, placing the router centrally in my home means in a hallway with no access to a cable outlet.

I spent hours reading reviews and researching different cable modem/routers. I purchased this one due to the info provided by the manufacturer and consumer reviews. WHAT A MISTAKE. The Wi-Fi range on this unit is worse then they say, I can be in the next room and get kicked offline. I have a Xbox One directly connected via a Cat5 Cable and get dropped. I have the Cox Premium Internet Pkg with 100mbs speed and this unit can’t come close to proving me half of it. I had to purchase a separate modem and router (Netgear) to finally resolve the issues.

Upgrade from SBG6580 and so far so good. I read the issues with customer service, but I had to call them when installing it and had no issues. TWC was helpful and other than trying to upsell my internet was easy and painless. Just ask to speak to a representative and bypass the automated prompts. The install booklet from Arris was older, so it had the wrong login info for the web manager, but after calling it was quick and easy to get the new updated login since the merger. The longest part was giving my information on the unit, but is completely understandable. They have a lot of products and want to make sure they are giving me the correct answer.
Overall, the internet is running better and I would recommend this for anyone looking to update their router/modem.

Excellent, I’ve used many cable modems in the past, and I have seen technology evolve from terrible to great, This particular piece is working flawlessly, and once you understand it’s full capabilities you will find that it has very good features, one feature I like to explore is the M.O.C.A. capability, but I don’t have a need for it at the moment because WIFI works flawlessly around our 2 story house. I’m very happy and got it for a good price here in Amazon.com. I’m in no way connected with this website, I’m just a customer and have been for many years, one of the first sites that I visit for all my purchasing needs. I would recommend this to anyone.
UPDATE:
I’ve had this for a few years and I’m happy with it, since I got it I have added a security system, a NAS and it works just fine.

I was tired of paying the $10 monthly fee to rent my modem/router from Comcast. I started shopping around and found the 6782AC, which has been a huge upgrade.
I pay for 75 mbps from Comcast. With the Comcast equipment I ran speed tests at all different times of day and would typically vary between 30-40 mbps. With the 6782AC, I have yet to see the speed fall below 75 mbps even topping out at 100 mbps. For the first time in I can remember, I watched an entire movie on Netflix without a single buffering pause. That to me alone is worth the price tag.
As for the set-up, it took about 15 minutes to get it all set up. Having Comcast switch it over was simple and they didn’t give me a hard time. Please note the password that they set as the default is “motorola” – not password like it says in the instructions.
I could not be happier with this purchase.

With TWC it will ONLY do 100 mbs. TWC says it is the 6782 and Arris says it is TWC but hey, I paid the big bucks for the 200 mbs I pay TWC for. Now, do I hassle sending it back and finding another one or keep it and pay for 200 mbs but only get 100mbs?
Pro
I mainly wanted faster and more secure wifi SO I will keep this. The wifi is a bit faster and I expect less drop outs AND it is A LOT more secure (for me at least) and with great tech support (except 1,000 questions they ask you first)… Learn how to use the security like every thing from seeing who logged into our wifi to being able to block people out and a whole lot more. Best of all, tech support will explain stuff na dhelp you. Down side, tech support does not know all of the answers. I thought I was hacked but found out on my own that my lap top wifi uses a different mac address than the same lap top hard wire net hook up thus 2 mac addresses for one computer.
I wish I read this review BEFORE I bought this. I would have wanted to get my full 200mbs but oh well. THEY and TWC should advertise 100mbs for this. Do I hear class action suit? They can avoid it via a simple red letter NOTICE..

This product has only been installed for 24 hours and we are loving it! It has tremendously helped boost our internet connection. We have TWC and their modem was horrible! Dealt with renting TWC’s modem for at least 2 years. TWC kept telling me that they were updating my modem by sending me another one. TWC kept cancelling my order and telling me a technician had to install it and I needed to up my speed to have VoIP, every time I called to complain. Nonsense! We didn’t realize how bad it was until we got this one. I can type, stream, and talk using our Vonage all with the person understanding everything I am saying. With TWC cable’s modem we couldn’t do anything while using our VoIP with Vonage. Now, the kids can stream videos, play, games, while I am typing this on the internet, and talking on the phone through Vonage. Thank you Motorola! Don’t hesitate to try this! Our family of 5 LOVES it!!!

Why was I renting a modem/wifi router from my cable company all that time? I have no idea. I could have bought this months ago and saved over $70 already.
This was on the list of compatible recommended modems by my cable provider, Suddenlink.
The modem as easy to setup right out of the box. All the instructions were easy to understand.
The security code and information is on the bottom of the modem but it is also on a label inside the instruction book. I thought this was an excellent addition, because I didn’t have to keep turning the mode, upside down to find the code and necessary information to activate it.
I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend this to others. Stop throwing away your money by renting from the cable provider.

I love this modem and WiFi router! We recently switched to cable Internet from land line Internet. We needed an all in one solution that provided the latest technology in modems and routers and decided to give this one a shot. Very glad we did! It features the latest DOCSIS 3.0 modem and a dual band WiFi router. I was surprised by the size of the unit when opening the box, it’s big! (8.8 inches by 10.1 inches) After the cable guy made sure our service was active and activated the box with the internet provider, we plugged it in and let it boot. Everything was already set up by default, such as a secure WiFi connection broadcasting on two different bands (2.4 ghz and 5 ghz). This unit can handle multiple connections without slowing down. We have not had to reboot it once in the 25 days we’ve had it, it performs very well! I highly recommend this unit if you are looking for an excellent combination of modem, WiFi router and the latest technology. You will not be disappointed!

This modem is pretty awesome. My internet speeds are super fast (after multiple tests on different devices, it is at 50mbps download speeds, upload varies from 7-25mbps). The internet rang is outstanding. I have internet connection everywhere in my house and a decent amount outside of it as well. The only complaints that I have is once I got Cox internet, it wouldn’t work for it. I had to reset it to factory settings (even though it was brand new) and then it worked. The manual is also incorrect. It stated the wrong password for logging into the modem. I had to google what the admin user and admin password was for it. The other complaint is that the 5G setting works great on computers/tablets, but for my iPhone’s it does not work at all so I make sure it is connected only to the normal WIFI (it could be a user setting/channel that needs to be changed, but I’ll keep you updated if I find something out). Other than that, I am pleased with this purchase.

Mine is making a very noticeable hissing sound as others have noted. It is too loud to ignore and Arris tech support was not very helpful. I am returning for a replacement since others have said that their unit runs silent or very quietly. The speed of ethernet connect is great and the MoCA feature is what you need for streaming TVs but the WIFI is average. I live in two story home and the 2.4G signal does not have adequate strength from upstairs to downstairs so unless you have MoCA WIFI router/extender, you will need a range extender to make this work.
The replacement is also making the hissing noise – hard to understand this since others have commented that their modems run silently. Might just be bad luck that I got two defective units in a row but I doubt it. Will be returning for a refund and looking to get a different model that does not make so much noise.

I have postponed buying this modem for a long time, because I thought it would be a hassle to connect, that I would have a technical stumble and not be able to recover…I dunno. At the same time, I felt silly for paying a monthly rental fee to Time Warner for a not-very-good Wifi modem. I’m happy that I’m kicking that one to the curb. I haven’t noticed any significant improvements in speed or performance, but it has only been “live” for about two hours.
By the way, internet service providers seem to have readily available instructions for set up. My only complaint about this product was that the Quick Start guide wasn’t very well done. This is a link to Time Warner’s instructions, but you can Google “activate surfboard modem INSERT NAMEOF PROVIDER” (…)

We were having issues with wifi dropping and buffering CONSTANTLY. I had contacted the cable company thinking it was the internet service but they came out and said the connection was fine. Turns out it was the wireless router which was bad. Once I installed the surfboard I was back in business. I can actually watch Netflix, Game and download on different devices at the same time. Prior to this I was buffering in 480p on youtube which was extremely frustrating.
The price was steep on this router, there are cheaper option out there. In fact I could have got one from the cable company for cheaper. I didnt want that. I wanted a high quality router and this is what we got with the ARRRIS Surfboard.
I would definitely recommend this item to everyone that is looking for a modem/router combo who is sick of slow wifi due to bad equipment provided by your cable company.

We replaced three devices (Arris SB6141 Cable Modem, Netgear WNDR4000 WiFi Router and Actiontec MoCA Router) with one device. This modem/router uses a single 110 plug (not a wall wart). This upgrade added 802.11AC and uses less total power, coax and network cords than the components it replaced. My Only gripe is the guest networks happened to use an IP address range I wanted to use (192.168.2.xxx). However, I just fixed a couple devices with fixed the IP addresses and everything works great. The MoCA is compatible with TiVo Roamio DVR and TiVo Mini’s. Our Honeywell thermostat, iPhones and iPads all connected automatically when I edited the WiFi setup to match old router. WiFi is now much more stable with large file transfers than the older Netgear Router it replaced. The TiVo Roamio needed a reset of it’s network settings to pair up to the new MoCA, the mini’s just had to be rebooted. We’re a month in and no reboots to this router have been required. What a difference!!

Picked this up when TWC jacked their rental rates on their modem/routers up to a point I figured I better do something. As an approved, “suggested” and best selling router for their service, I picked this up. I will say I thought it was faster as Netflix and other streaming apps seemed to respond more quickly but I haven’t done something right in the configuration as our wi fi drops regularly with this one. I have made static IP addresses to the printer, and other devices and at least 4x a day when you jump on the laptop and try to Google or got to a site, you get the Server Connection was lost message or the dreaded printer is offline message. So it is kind of annoying and cost me way more time in troubleshoot than it was probably worth, even if I saved a few bucks. We never had this issue with the TWC equipment. Maybe a more tech savvy person will have better luck. Maybe I need to lean on TWC to provide a solution but my experience has been aggravating and a step back in terms of reliability and user experience.

I should have paid more attention to the reviews and forum write ups. I have been, for the most part, very happy with this product. But alas, after 8 months of ownership the wireless (2.4 band in particular) seems to no longer work! I have no trouble connecting to the 5 GHz band so I didn’t doc all the stars, but not having the ability to maintain a stable wireless connection on 2.4 sucks!
Update, the 2.4 GHz band only seems to work for select device around the house. One of laptops and one of my phones will connect, but the rest of the family will have constant drop outs when connected to that band.
Over the last near-2 years of ownership, these item has had nothing but random wireless issues. Having to reset or restart the router on a weekly and sometimes daily basis is not ideal, albeit for wired or wireless connection. I’ll be working from home soon and need a reliable and stable internet connection. Will be in the market for another modem and ideally separate router.

It’s January, bought in May and just had to replace it. I bought it because it was one of two recommended by suddenlink for purchase and I didn’t want to rent equipment. Increasingly over the last 8 months I’ve had to reset the router to the point that if I want to use the internet, I’m resetting the router. My smart TV wouldn’t connect anymore. I have smart lights and switches that wouldn’t connect which was a huge disappointment. This whole time I thought it was suddenlink and something was wrong with the wiring. I had them do testing of the lines, check everything, they replaced the router with one of theirs just to be sure, because it couldn’t possibly be the router. Well here I am using my smart tv no problem on a rented router.

I had a lot of trouble with this and a previous model allowing too many of my peripheral devices that should remain connected to suddenly disconnect and not wish to reconnect (wi-fi camera’s specifically). While this is sleek and stylish – I found it (and the lower grade prior model very hinky and returned it as I expect things to work properly without a lot of time and effort. This required too much.
For a highly rated unit, this – to me, is far inferior to the stand alone Motorola DOCSIS 3 – Surfboard modem and Apple Airport Extreme combo I have been using and went back to

I bought this modem/router about two years ago. At the start it seemed to be ok but for the last year plus I’ve had problems with it dropping the internet. This happens on all my devices both Wi-Fi and wired. The only way to restore service was to do a AC power reset. This was happening once or twice a day. Comcast came out, ran a new coax line from the pedestal to the house and boosted the signal level. Same problem. The Arris Tech guys were great but could not solve the problem. Additionally, I lost the 5G service on three occasions. I had to do a factory reset to restore this. I cannot recommend this modem/router based upon my experiences. I purchased a Netgear AC1900 modem/router. It’s fantastic. I’v Had it for over a week with no problems. It’s faster and the range is greater than the Arris. I read online that other people have had problems with the Arris modem/router connected to Comcast. If you have Comcast internet I do not recommend this Arris modem/router. Get the Netgear, its much more reliable.
